Family Photo Outfit Ideas for Colorado Springs: Color Palettes That Look Beautiful in Every Season

One of the most common questions I receive before a family photo session is, "What should we wear?" The good news is that you don't need matching white shirts and blue jeans to create beautiful family portraits. In fact, coordinating colors and textures often creates a much more timeless and elevated look.
Colorado Springs offers incredible variety for family portraits, from golden grass fields and mountain views to colorful gardens and urban settings. Choosing the right color palette can help your family stand out while complementing the beautiful Colorado landscape.
Here are some of my favorite family photo color palettes that photograph beautifully throughout Colorado Springs.
1. Warm Neutrals and Earth Tones
Color Palette:
Cream
Beige
Camel
Rust
Olive Green
Soft Brown
This palette is one of my favorites because it complements Colorado's natural landscape perfectly. The warm tones blend beautifully with open fields, mountain backdrops, and autumn scenery while creating a timeless look that won't feel dated years from now.
Perfect for:
Garden of the Gods
Open Space parks
Fall family sessions
Mountain locations
Style Tip: Mix different textures such as knit sweaters, linen dresses, corduroy, and suede accessories to add visual interest.
2. Soft Blues and Neutrals
Color Palette:
Dusty Blue
Light Gray
Cream
Tan
Soft White
Soft blues create a clean, classic look that photographs beautifully year-round. These colors pair especially well with Colorado's blue skies and mountain scenery.
Perfect for:
Summer family sessions
Mountain locations
Open fields
Lifestyle sessions
Style Tip: Avoid bright royal blue and instead choose softer shades that photograph more naturally.
3. Sage Green and Cream
Color Palette:
Sage Green
Ivory
Light Beige
Taupe
Soft Brown
Sage green has become increasingly popular because it feels natural, sophisticated, and works beautifully against Colorado's landscape.
Perfect for:
Spring sessions
Garden locations
Mountain settings
Wildflower season
Style Tip: Add subtle floral patterns for girls and women while keeping the overall color palette cohesive.
4. Rich Fall Colors
Color Palette:
Burgundy
Mustard
Rust
Cream
Deep Olive
Colorado fall colors are stunning, and rich jewel tones complement the season beautifully without competing with the scenery.
Perfect for:
September and October sessions
Aspen locations
Fall foliage
Mountain family portraits
Style Tip: Use one or two accent colors while keeping the rest of the family's wardrobe neutral.
5. Navy, Cream, and Camel
Color Palette:
Navy
Cream
Camel
Tan
Light Gray
This timeless combination works exceptionally well for large families and multi-generational sessions.
Perfect for:
Year-round sessions
Formal family portraits
Extended family gatherings
Holiday card photos
Style Tip: Vary the shades and textures so everyone coordinates without looking identical.
What Colors Should Families Avoid?
While there are no strict rules, these choices can sometimes distract from your portraits:
Neon colors
Bright logos
Large graphics
Matching outfits on every family member
Extremely busy patterns
Pure white on everyone
The goal is for people to notice your family's connection and personalities first—not your clothing.

My Best Advice: Coordinate, Don't Match
Choose two or three primary colors and build outfits around them. When family members wear complementary colors rather than identical outfits, portraits feel more natural, modern, and timeless.
Most importantly, wear clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Your family's genuine connection will always be the most important part of your portraits.
