So you've finally taken the step to seize this moment in time for your family's long awaited photos. Summer is here and you want to capture these precious moments while everyone is together and the pace of life is a little more relaxed. Although it can be challenging to get the whole family dressed and out the door, the hope is that this guide will inspire you to create a look for your family that makes it onto your gallery wall and makes you smile each time you walk into that room.

You want to have a plan for your family photos because they are an investment. Then you can have Billy Crystal tell you over and over again that "You look maarvelous!"...ok I may be dating myself here a bit but you get the gist. So let's get to the good stuff.
3 Key Tips:
Mom's Outfit
Most likely, you are a mom reading this and you're the master coordinator of this family session. If you're like me, you will also be the most particular about the images so it's important to choose a dress or outfit that is not only comfortable (think kneeling and playing with your child during the session) but makes you feel beautiful, "maavelous", and confident. Maxi dresses are typically the most flattering for a variety of body types because they are a bit more fitted on top and flowy at the bottom. Long skirts or loose pants also work well. Choose 2-3 colors from your dress to pull from for the rest of the family. If you have a baby you will be holding in your arms, choose a slightly contrasting color so they can stand out. Voluminous fabric is timeless, whether it’s tiered ruffles, statement sleeves, or tassels, the more fabric, the better! Extra fabric will add so much movement and life to your portraits! Think flowy but not shapeless with some type of fitted waist.
2. Muted Colors
This one is important as you want the family to be the center of attention, not the colors. Muted doesn't necessarily mean just cream or beige, it just means a less saturated version of a color. For summer, this could mean mellow greens, buttery yellows, soft lilacs, light browns, and pale blues. For a Bohemian look, opt for watercolors and simple floral patterns. Bold colors have their place, like in a downtown or urban setting and for individual portraits (think senior portraits) but for families in nature, it competes with the landscape and takes away from the emotional connection between the family. Other colors like neon can also cast an unflattering color on the face. Also, choose simple patterns and textures. Stripes and logos are a distraction in a family portrait unless there is a special message or purpose behind the logo that is typically for promoting a special cause.
3. Accessories
Now that you have colors and fabric down, what will make this family photo stand out? From muslin-covered headbands to natural materials like straw hats and threaded bracelets, fun accessories are perfect for summer! For young boys, try a t-shirt with suspenders and add in a cute hat for some individual shots. For young girls, try a cute head wrap or floral wreath and long flowy dress like mom. Dads tend to sweat a bit more, especially in summer so a good performance shirt that wicks moisture is a good start. J. Crew and Banana Republic also have great selections of men's pants that are wrinkle free. Long pants are recommended as dad's "hairy" legs can also be a distraction in a family photo. As far as shoes, dress it up a bit but be comfortable. Tennis shoes are great for sports sessions but for families, stick to nicer comfort shoes.
